- INSTALLING AND USING
- THE ATARI HARD DISK
- INSTALLABLE DRIVER
- --------------------
-
-
-
- HINSTALL is a utility that will install a hard disk driver
- on your Atari SH-204 hard disk. It has been in use for
- quite some time here in Atari's systems software group.
-
- The \AUTO folder on the root of C: works much the same as it
- did on floppy disk. However, applications that require they
- be run from the \AUTO folder on A: will break. If you own
- (and use) such applications, you should think twice about
- installing the driver.
-
- Files you should have on the floppy disk on A: are:
-
- A:\README.DOC This file
- A:\HINSTALL.PRG Installation utility
- A:\HINSTALL.RSC Resource file for utility
- A:\204ROOT.IMG Root sector image
- A:\204BOOT.IMG Boot sector image
-
-
- In addition, you will need a copy of the hard disk driver in
- the \AUTO folder on A:
-
- A:\AUTO\AHDI.PRG Hard disk driver (in AUTO folder)
-
- You *MUST* have a version of AHDI.PRG that came with a ver-
- sion of HDX dated later than 1-Sep-1986. (Otherwise this
- installer won't work).
-
-
- Before you run HINSTALL, make sure that your hard disk has
- at least one partition on it (the installer will clobber a
- 20-megabyte unpartitioned disk). If you have not yet parti-
- tionsed your hard disk, now is the time to back it up, run
- HDX, and partition it. Make sure you have a version of HDX
- dated later than the first of September, 1986.
-
- *********************** WARNING ************************
- * You MUST partition your hard disk before proceeding. *
- * If you don't, you'll have to anyway, because running *
- * HINSTALL on an unpartitioned disk will trash *
- * everything on it. *
- ********************************************************
-
- Ok. Connect your hard disk. Put the hard disk driver
- floppy in A:, turn your ST off, and then turn it on again.
- Open up A: and double-click on HINSTALL.PRG. Pick the
- [Install] item from the [File] menu; the installer will ask
- for confirmation and, if you click on the [Yes] button, it
- will go ahead and install the driver on C:.
-
- If you power-cycle your ST again, the hard disk's lamp will
- blink furiously for a second and a message will pop up on
- the screen (and then disappear) just before the desktop
- comes up. You can put a blank (formatted) floppy in A: to
- speed up the boot process.
-
- You can also put your desk accessories in the root of C:.
-
- The installer puts a file called SH204DVR.SYS in the root of
- C:. It also places code in the root sector (physical sector
- 0) and the first partition's boot sector (logical sector 0)
- to load the driver file into memory, relocated it, and start
- it up. The driver file on C: may be removed or renamed
- without ill effect; if the driver file is missing, the hard
- disk driver simply isn't loaded. Thus you can go back to
- the old method of loading the driver (from A:'s AUTO folder)
- at any time.
-
- Another way of disabling the hard disk boot is to press down
- the [ALT] key on the keyboard just after turning the system
- on. You need to time it just right (though it's not TOO
- tough). One simple way to do this is:
-
- 1. Eject the floppy from drive A:;
- 2. Turn on the ST;
- 3. While the ST is trying to read A:, press down and HOLD
- the [ALT] key. Make sure you get [ALT] down before the
- hard disk is accessed;
- 4. Eventually the system will give up trying to boot from
- floppy, and access the hard disk. Since you have [ALT]
- down, the boot code will exit almost immediately;
- 5. Release the [ALT] key when the floppy is accessed for
- the second time (for the \AUTO folder, DESKTOP.INF and
- so on). Re-insert the floppy.
